planning cinematograpghy

                                                     Cinematography

Cinematography is crucial in films because it makes it interesting and it gives  a clear representations of characters.I believe that it is important to think about cinematography, especially in thriller  films because it includes the camera angles and shots ,camera movements  and the lighting within the frame shot. In our thriller we hope to create tension towards the audience when it comes to a dramatic in our scene.without  cinematography films would not have the same impact  on the audience or we won't be able to have impact on the film.

An example of some conventional use of cinematography will be when the audience are shown  close up  in order to build a relationship between the characters and the audience  for example  the audience see a close up a someone is crying, this will immediately make the audience feel sympathy for that particular character that's been shown on the screen.

1- A pan medium shot will be used  to introduce all the characters, this will give the audience an understanding of the characters as the characters will be introduce so that they will know type of character is represented as within the opening scene.

2-We will use over shoulder to show the mystery character want to know who it is,  this will create suspense for the audience as they don't know who this character is yet  because he is giving his back to the audience this will  make the audience what to know this character.

3-  We will use a point of view shot  to show the mystery character approaching the group of friends, this will create tension and it will make the audience feel more involved as they  would want to know whats happening to them.

4-  We will use pan shot  to show movement of the characters and their surrounding,  this will give the audience of what the area that their are in.

5- We will use hand held  to show the nerds falling over  this will show the emotions of the character  through the shaking of the falling of the nerd. this will make the audience feel  focus on the movement of the character.

6-  we will use reaction shot  when  the couple find the nerds body in the forest, this will show the audience how the characters feels if they were in their situation.

7- We will use high angle to the mystery character tied on a chair. This will show the audience that the mystery character is inferior and not an antagonist as the audience most of thought the mystery character  was the antagonist.

Conclusion:  due to planning cinematography  I am able to understand what my thriller will be like while going back to my book to decide on what type of camera shot i will use into my thriller. The planning has  made it easier for me and the rest of my group, this has made me feel more confident learning how to use cinematography.

planning editing

                                                      Editing

Editing in film is very important as it  can effect the look and feel of film dramatically. It is important to think about editing, especially when in thrillers so that the viewers are able to understand what is actually happening. for example if the editor wishes to make the audience feel  certain emotions  such as scared, confused  they would need to edit the film in certain way so that the audience can feel the emotions. Some of the technique that's  are used in thrillers are usually fast pace  and slow paced editing to can be used to create suspense  and it can capture actions.

1- Slow pace- we will use slow pace to introduce the characters and focus on  the characters on what they will be doing during the moment their will be doing this will also show the characters facial expressions. I have chosen to use this because this is conventional  to thriller genre because it allows the audience to see what type of editing is used in thriller.

2- Straight cut- we chose use straight cut to move into the next scene to show all the characters on the frame and also to make the audience feel confuse as their would want to know whats happening on the scene the reason why i chose to use this is because this is conventional to thriller genre as it shows  the next scene.

3-We will use straight cut when putting the clips together so that the audience can follow  the narrative without them getting confuse for example  when the antagonist will walking towards  the group of friends this then allows us to see the straight cut of  the  mysterious characters walking towards them this can create suspense  for the audience.

4- We are planing to use fade to black which will create suspense and tension  towards the audience, this will be used at the end off our scene where we see the  victim tied on a chair and we see the actual antagonist.

5- We are also planning to use camera recording effect this will capture  someone in black running  away from the camera this will allow us to show the characters movements while their are moving with the camera.

planning sound

                                                   Sound

Sound is important elements within the creation of films. This is because it set the whole mood of the film.I believe it is important to plan sounds we will use because sound causes the audience to connect with the sound by knowing what their watching is making them feel in certain way. For example if the audience  see a gun being fired then you hear an alien zapper sound the audience will be disconnected from the film making question where the gunshot can develop their relationship between the characters thinking the situation is real.

1-Non- Diegetic  sound of heavy breathing will be used when the one the character found blood on the floor this will help to build tension has the characters reactions sound this is conventional to thriller genre as it will it builds relationship with the audience it gets them to position them self in the characters shoes.

2-We will use diegetic sounds when the character is stepping on the twigs as this will make our thriller more realistic for the audience to watch this is conventional to thriller as most thrillers can be realistic for the audience feel the impact and not just think  by watching whats on the screen that can make them believe the characters.

3-On screen sound will be used the audience are mumbling something to each other, we chose to use on screen sound so that the audience can understand the characters personalities from the way the way they appear on the screen this is conventional to thriller as  it make the thriller more realistic.

4-We will use off screen sound when the nerds gets attacked by the another characters as he will be running for his life we chose to use this as it helps to build up tension  this is conventional to thriller because the audience starts to guess is going to happen next as the tension builds up.

5-We will use parallel sound we chose this at the end of the scene where the antagonist is revealed this will create sense of reality within the film it can create atomsphere this is conventional to thriller genre as the relationship will be built with the audience and the characters in the screen.

Planning Mise en scene

                                                                 Mise en scene

Location- we chose to do our production in a forest because forest are  isolated places of land where hardly  no one goes there and bad things are a bound to happen in the forest. Another location that we will use is going to be a garage because it will be secluded due to the reduced risk of anyone going into the garage.

Lighting- The main type of lighting we will use is low key lighting this is because it will fit in well with our location as our location will be in  forest it's a dark place and dull. Also we will use high key lighting at the garage  because all  the lights  will be surrounding the character  which it will become  a daze to the victim which it will make him vulnerable.

Iconography- One of our iconography will be a camera which will capture things beyond the characters belief  as they do realise that severity of the situation that they in, will also use to confuse the audience .Another iconography we will use is ropes  to tie the victim at the end scene, also we will use blood  will represent  the danger of the forest concealed by the trees and dirt that will be untouchable  for a long time.

Body language&facial expression- At the start of our production the characters will appear relax and confident  as they enter the forest  knowing that they will be filming their  thriller they will be all over the moon as their nearly come close to finishing of  their task that's been given to them. They then become scared when of the mystery character appear from the bush and discovers the other characters  everything changes as they this character appears. How they was laughing  and then they got scared.  The characters body language will be calm and relax at the beginning of our production  as they are about to shot their media work and when one of  a mysterious character appear towards  the people within the group will feel uncomfortable and frightened as their find  friend dead  their facial expression will be confused and lost as they will not know whats happening to them. The mysterious character will have a strong body bod langauge to show that his confident and unfeated character, his facial  expressin will be unclear at the start of the scene the it will appear evil at the end.

Costumes- we decided to the charcater will be wearing a causal wear, for example the nerd will  be wearing a glasses and unfited trouser with a shirt to show that his a nerd, the female character will be wearing a wolly cream jumper to show that she's  a female victim her hair will be tied back, she's not going to have a lot of make up on because we  wanted to she her natural look for the audience to see that she's an attractive character. The mysterious chararcter will  have a dark colours, he will; also wearing a hoodie black so that he won't reveal his identity to the audience and the characters in the forest.

planning character representation

                                  Character representation

Character representation is important within the film simply because it allows the audience to get a clear idea of  the narrative of the film better it also shows a clear relationships between the audience and the characters can build. It can be conventional for films its important to have a lot of characters so that its meets the audiences expectation of the characters personalities that should be within the film.

The main characters within our thriller
.The nerd timothy -16 years old

Jason  bully- 16 years old

The couple  ( Cindy white and Brandon -16 years old)

Timothy is 16 years old is very smart he get bullies by people in his class because he is very smart boy, he enjoys learning and experimenting stuff his very determined, the nerd does media his assessment was to shoot a thriller film he thought that he can choose his own group but the teacher put him in a group of the people that always used to make him feel uncomfortable, they always used to laugh at him everything he did it was all a joke to them he had no choice but to work them people that made his life hell. Mainly his role in the thriller is to show this character as useless to make the audience feel sympathy for this character has he can come across as  unwanted character, this character will be wearing a casual outfit such as jeans with baggy top and glasses as this will clearly shows the audience what type of the character he is. his body language will be quit uncomfortable clenched back to show that his a powerless character.

Jason is the bully he is 16 years old , he has been bullied before that's why he feels better bullying others because of what happen to him in the past , he is the most popular boy the school, his sly clever but he choose not to show people that his smart he likes to act tough but he can be a soft character the past hunts him that's why he behaviors in certain way, as he was told to create a thriller film he thought this time he can pick his own team but it didn't go in plans with his expectations, when he find out that the nerd will be on his team he really got furious has he really hated the nerd. Jason will be a Hench tall character  has he is a  character that tries to get all the tension the character will be wearing jeans and white top to show that he is a strong character his body language will show the audience that his tall body built to show the audience that he has the authority and his facial expressions will change dramatically.

Cindy white is 16 years old she is a female character she very girly she loves relaxing with  her boyfriend she's  can come across as attitude shes a follower everything her boyfriend does she wants to do it as well she can be annoying sometimes deep down shes a sweet girl but she's mean to timothy, she will be wearing a creamy top and light pink skirt to show that she's innocent character , her will be curly she will not have a lot of make up on  as this character has to be attractive for the male audience to drawn into the this attractive character this will make them feel sorry for the character as her innocence she can be a vulnerable character as she is unaware of whats about going to happen to her as she is not powerful character.

Brandon is Cindy's girlfriend he really cares about his girl, he is observed character he doesn't really say much but he can across as an aggressive character, he once had a fight with timothy for staring at his girlfriend from that time he didn't like timothy when he was told to partner up with timothy to make the thriller film he really got angry when they got to the forest to shot their thriller film, he will be wearing a casual clothes and blue top to show up his muscles to show that he is a strong character.

Planning storyboard

A storyboard is a graphical representation of a narrative that has been created, within the storyboard it shows each movement of the character scene by scene. Storyboard look likes square boxes on a piece of paper they are used by every film maker in order to make filming actual less stressful and it also means that the actors, directors, camera operator know what to do and when to do it without having to stop and talk about how they will plan out the next scene.
Storyboards needs to contain information about cinematography , iconography , lighting, actors. sound, narrative , location, duration and number of shots. Including all of these in storyboard will make the producing the scene a lot more easier as the producer and the director can work with and around the information they have on the storyboard. Storyboard  also ensure that you don't forget any shots / scenes  by accident they make it easy to know where you need to edit the film for example fade , straight cut.
In our lesson we were working within our group to create a storyboard that represented the narrative my group chose to use, to do this we had to think about how we wanted our thriller to look like , how long each scene would be like , the location , dialogue, sounds, lighting and the actors/people needed to film that shot. we wanted to see if the narrative fitted well with  the storyboard this made it much easier for us to get on with our filming.

Our storyboard.

The top picture is the our  group storyboard it includes images and the micro elements that we will use on our thriller,it is organised well  this will help us when it comes to filming or thriller  as we can easily understand it and  we knew  this makes it  easier for us to make know whose going to be needed on our thriller the narrative helps to be sure of the narrative as we  can gather an idea of how it will look like.
