How is
the opening sequence of scream conventional to thriller opening?
In this
essay I will be analysing the famous scene from scream. I will mainly focus on
four micro elements I will discuss about the audience response and how micro
elements make the audience feel while whatching this opening .I will also dicuss about how the editing are used to make the audience understend the narrative clear in the mind.feel. At the beginning of the scene there’s a young
woman dressed in cream and white, her hair is blonde and she is attractive. This is stereotypical to an opening thriller
as the audience would have faith in the female victim as she is expected to be
blonde and innocent.
While
watching the opening of scream the audience instantly notice use of white
clothing on the female victim this
create more sympathy and vulnerability towards the character and the
increasingly worsen situation she was in this specially seen when the mysterious killer attacked her.
The antagonist was wearing black, dark cloaked clothing and this contrasted
with the female victim’s white clothing it represented the sense of ‘’good vs.
evil’’ from the clothing alone in addition when the antagonist attacked the
blood contrasted with the dark colour, the clothing also used to produce a much
more dramatic effect than if the clothing were to be darker. The clothing is
also used to create stereotype; the audience notices that the female victim’s
boyfriend was wearing jeans and football jacket; this could represent him as a
‘’unworthy’ ’status. As well as this the props that has been used in the opening
scene represent how the events have untold within the scene for example the
popcorn popping gradually adapt to the current events this is used from
beginning to end this is to show how quickly events untold , I thought that the
most significant use of mise en scene however the use of house phone throughout
the scene showed domestic phone is the
first thing the audience sees, therefore it gave the audience a clear idea of
what might happen next. The phone is
signified throughout the scene including up to the female victim’s death the
audience that this placed significant emphasis on use of the phone but the
lighting within the scene also allows for the tension to build up and change
the mood in the scene when the character are in the darkness, vulnerability is created and fear additionally for the audience as
well as the characters as the scene unfolds an example of this would be when
the female victim moves from the light and bright kitchen to the dark corridor
as the conversation on the phone worsens.
The opening
scene of scream uses specific shots to produce tension, long shots are used of
the female victim consistently as she’s kept moving around the house to give
the audience a tour of her household this allows the audience to see all
possible exits (or entrances) so that if something terrible happens the audience would be able to see which route she will take. the susspens is built and the dramatic irony can develop in the use of camera angels, low angel shot are used to create vulnerability towards the female victim and the camera focus on the mysterious killer in addition there's several close up shot are used so the audience can feel more involved in action, while the female victim is being chased by the antagonist.
The
sound are very enhancing it create fear and tension within the oepning scene, the voice of known man on phone has deep this caused the audience to feel uneasy, uncomfotable this particulally contrast to softer sound voice of the innocent female victim. the diegetic sound is very crucial to create the good and evil within the scene presenting the characters with their personalities and also the use of non-diegetic sound becomes ambient sound within the opening scene to create tenison for the audience an example of is the chirpy sound of the doorbell which is used to present achirpy upbeat sound which contrast to the situation the female victim is currently in these are how sound is used to in the scene to produce suspense and fear for the audience whatching the film.
Finally the editing used in the scream is to create increasingly tense of the opening scene, the timings between each shots are very important, at the tense point in the scene , the timings of each shots reduce to produce fear towards the audience theres a lot of close up shots, long shots are used when editing together this is used because to create better understanding for the audience so that they are able to straight away get the narrative of the scream opening scene.
A sound scene analysis. All micro-elements have been identified and dsicussed to some extent. PEER has been attempted and some discussion about audience response.

-write about events in sections like we learned in class, this will give you a much better writing style as you can discuss events in the order they occur so the essay is a better read
-try and identify at least two examples per micro element
